Midlands State University Environmental Society under the Student Development Office in conjunction with the Advocate for Earth Climate Organization conducted a climate change and climate justice workshop aimed at encouraging young people to participate in climate change issues on the 24th of March at MSU Gweru Main Campus.
Welcoming the participants, Student Development Assistant, Mr. M. Mwanza expressed gratitude toward the Advocate for Earth Climate Organization, the Students Representative Council, Young Men Christian Association, the MSU peer educators and all students for attending the event which fosters environmental and climate change dialogue with the youth.
“The purpose of this workshop is to engage in environmental dialogue with the youth and to identify measures to mitigate climate change,’’ said Mr. Mwanza.
Advocate for Earth Climate Organization, Press and Communication Officer, Mr. Ndatenda Njanike highlighted that his organization is interested in cultivating a culture of climate justice through educating the youth on climate advocacy and environmental safety.
“It is our duty as the youth to take action in coming up with climate solutions and to educate people on environmental rights,” said Mr. Njanike
Department of Geography, Environmental Sustainability and Resilience Building Lecturer Dr. Mavis Mbiriri pointed out that young people are the key actors in raising awareness, running educational programs and promoting sustainability lifestyle, nature conservation, and adopting environmentally friendly practices.
“Let us not worry about climate change but let’s look at the aspects that cause it and find measures to mitigate them and conduct research as young people,’’ said Dr. Mbiriri.
In his closing remarks, Student Representative Council-Secretary General, Nathan Chigoya encouraged the youth participants to implement the lessons of the workshop in their communities.
In compliance to Sustainable Development Goal 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impact, the University is committed to equip its students with requisite and relevant information to address the global issue.
